Computing: Introducing BBC Micro:bit & Purplemash Chip app

To advance the computing curriculum and cross-curriculum use of technology in school, we now have a set of 30x BBC Micro:bits & the ability to code using the Purplemash Purple Chip app.

1. A Micro:bit is a pocket-sized, programmable computer that introduces students to the world of coding in a fun and interactive way. Its simplicity and versatility make it an ideal additional tool for teaching coding concepts to our students. These next-gen coding kits are designed to go beyond the basics.

With the Micro:bit, students can progress from simple block-based programming to more complex coding projects. The kits include a variety of sensors, LEDs, and other components that allow students to create interactive and dynamic projects, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

2. The Purple Chip app is now available on our school ipads. The “Purple Chip” app in conjunction with “2Code Purple Chip Mode” is a way of controlling an external physical device and its components from code that is written and run from within Purple Mash.

What can students do with Purple Chip?

With the Purple Chip app and 2Code Purple Chip tool, students can:

  • Use the device’s microphone to detect sound
  • Use the device’s speakers to play a sound
  • Program tilt, shake and vibrate commands
  • Program the device to flash using the device’s torch
